Support the future of Mechanics' Hall!

Dear Friend of Mechanics’ Hall,

The first time I walked into Mechanics’ Hall, I fell in love. I suspect this feeling is familiar to you as well. Entering our historic building is breathtaking whether it is your first visit or your fiftieth.

For over 160 years, Mechanics’ Hall has been at the center of Portland's art district - a community for people who are curious about history, creativity, ingenuity, and knowledge. We are grateful to you, and others like you, who have allowed us to thrive.

Did you know that over twenty-five thousand people now come through our building each year?

As inaugural Executive Director, I’ve had the honor of getting to know the many members, visitors, and supporters who walk through our doors. They come to find community in our majestic library or take dance lessons with the Portland Swing Project in our grand ballroom. They drop children off at one of our Maine Kids Code classes or take a workshop with the Illustration Institute. They come to hear plant artist John Sundling or designer Jill McGowan discuss the creative process as part of our Makers at the Hall series. And they come on First Fridays to hear a poet or celebrate a new book launch with our Print Bookstore reading series.

2019 was a big year for Mechanics’ Hall. With both individual and foundation support, we have restored our glorious ballroom to its original footprint as designed by John Calvin Stevens and our library has been transformed by the widening of book stacks and new lighting over the shelves.

Your generosity supports the day to day expenses associated with maintaining this historic landmark but of equal importance, it supports the activities that bring our building to life.

In 2020, we want to:

  • Expand our library hours and add new seating and study areas.
  • Produce more member and community programming.
  • Upgrade the acoustics in our ballroom to better serve the many artists who want to perform in this space.

Help make these things happen with a donation today!

Each morning, when I open the large wooden doors on Congress Street, I think about the librarians, the mechanical artists, and the trades and craftspeople who have worked tirelessly to support this special place for the last 160 years. As we reflect on 2019, ask yourself what makes Mechanics’ Hall special to you and remember us in your year-end giving. Thank you!

With gratitude,

Annie Leahy
